Newfields - Marguerite (Meg) P. Anderson, age 91, of Piscassic Road, died peacefully at her home in Newfields on February 11, 2013. Meg died at her home in the aftermath of a blizzard just as she came into the world, born during a blizzard. Born in the house behind The Newfields Country Store, she was the daughter of Zora and Fred James Oliver Augustus Spead. Her parents owned and operated the store. Zora died of Bright’s disease in 1932 and Meg inherited her stepmother, Helena, in 1933. The store remained in the family until 1952.
Growing up, Meg had a paper route and was the store’s home delivery service. She was an Exeter High School graduate and attended UNH for a year before marrying Bertel Rudolph Anderson on April 5, 1942, in Lynn, MA. This war bride worked at GE in Lynn until Bert returned from The Battle of the Bulge. After several moves, “Bert & I” settled into their beautifully scenic and historic home in 1948. The house was originally owned by Fred Foss, but in a life tenancy arrangement he initiated, Bert and Meg cared for him, the home, and his horse for the rest of his life, and in exchange, the home was passed to the Andersons upon his death.
With her large garden, Aunt Meg became known as the Newfields vegetable lady, delivering to those in need. She worked at Kingston-Warren Manufacturing, enjoyed snowmobiling, deer hunting, bird feeding, Halloween, canasta, fifth wheeling, large Sunday dinners for relatives, sledding on the hill, her “Newfields Ladies” lunch group at Gepetto’s, and the Newfields Extension group (the last one left in Rockingham County).
She was predeceased by Bert in 2003 and her sisters Irene and Ditty. Aunt Meg is survived by her brother Jon, and many nieces and nephews. She thanks all of her friends, neighbors and relatives for their help over the years and especially to her caregivers these last few months.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Newfields Community Church, Main Street, Newfields.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday, April 28th at 11 a.m. in the Rt. 108 Cemetery, Newfields.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Center, WWW.DANA-FARBER.ORG/GIFT, or Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH03833.
